2020 Blanc de Blanc Sparkling Chardonnay

2020 Blanc de Blanc Sparkling Chardonnay

One hundred percent Chardonnay at its sparkling best, a lip-smacking wine with grapefruit and melon flavours and a refreshingly dry finish.

A terrific way to get a dinner party bubbling along or enjoyed by itself with a special someone.

Winemaker's notes.

A first for the winery ; a 100% Chardonnay-based sparkling wine harvested early from our vineyard to produce an elegant wine with a fine acid spine. Light in colour with a fine bead, the bouquet has aromas of grapefruit, passionfruit and citrus bud as well as floral undertones. The palate is lively with citrus flavours and a mouth-coating texture from 8 months yeast lees contact. The finish is dry and long which cleanses and leaves the palate unsated.

food pairing

Delicious on its own or will complement cold meats, tapas, seafood and poultry dishes.

2020 Hunter Valley Shiraz Cabernet Rosé

2020  Hunter Valley Shiraz Cabernet Rosé

Despite Rosé having a reputation as an easy-drinking style (or because of it), we take our Rosé making very seriously. The fruit for this particular wine was grown on our home vineyard and harvested early to keep this rosé light and more-ish. The Iron Gate Estate style has aromas of redcurrant, rosebud, and cranberry with an easy-going palate of red berries, and a refreshingly dry finish that is sure to please.

This wine sells out on its release so make sure you get in quickly for your allotment.

Winemaker's notes.

This Rosé is predominantly made from early harvested Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from our home vineyard. The grapes were allowed a traditional short skin-contact time before being gently pressed, and then the clear juice was cool fermented over a few weeks. A light blush-pink in colour, with aromas of rose bud, redcurrant and fruit pastille and possessing a delicious and savoury cranberry palate, this wine is perfect for any occasion. A real refinement of our style and one we are sure you will enjoy.

food pairing

Delicious on its own as an aperitif or it will complement salads, cold meats, tapas, seafood and poultry and pork  dishes. Enjoy this wine in moderation.

2020 Hunter Valley Sweet Semillon Verdelho (SSV)

2020 Hunter Valley  Sweet Semillon Verdelho (SSV)

This delicious wine is bound to be a favourite, and has the varietal hallmarks of these two varieties, with delightful aromas of passionfruit, pineapple and citrus notes on both the bouquet and palate. Yummo!

This wine sells out quickly, so......

Winemaker's notes

Don't let the word "sweet" put you off! This wine has been made to balance on the fine edge of fruit sweetness/residual sugar and a crisp, drying finish. The Semillon component had its ferment stopped, leaving the wine with a modicum of residual sweetness, while the Verdelho component was fermented dry and has the varietal fruit salad traits of the variety. We combined them both for a delicious wine. The fruit -salad and passionfruit bouquet leads to a poised palate with tropical fruit flavours, some residual sweetness and a refreshing sherbet-like acid finish.

food pairing

A great aperitif or pair it with spicy seafood or Asian dishes. A terrific follow-up to the very popular 2019 Sweet Semillon….

2019 Primera Semillon × 2

2019 Primera Semillon

This Semillon is quartz-green in colour with lifted, estery, citrus bud, passionfruit and lemon-grass aromas. As the wine matures it will develop the lemon-butter, toast and marmalade characters consistent with this variety.

Winemaker's notes.

The fruit was grown on our home block  from a dry and hot year, so we decided to pick a little earlier than usual. To amplify the fruit notes we also used a specific Sauvignon Blanc yeast. While young, the wine exhibits citrus bud and lime aromas and the refined palate possesses grapefruit and lime flavours and a refreshingly dry finish. This wine will mature well over the medium term and, with careful cellaring, will develop bottle -aged toasty and lemon curd notes both on the bouquet and palate.

food pairing

This wine will complement shell fish salads, asian-spiced steamed fish or chicken pasta dishes. Enjoy our wine in moderation.

2019 Hunter Valley Verdelho × 2

2019 Hunter Valley Verdelho

Verdelho is a variety suited to our climate and is best consumed young and fresh to take advantage of the  zingy fruit salad  characters that make this wine so appealing. Traditionally a variety used in fortified winemaking, this delicious wine will suit most palates looking for a fruit-forward, flavoursome wine. It’s always exciting to work with this fruit off our vineyard with consistently good results every year, evident by its popularity at our Cellar Door.

Winestate  magazine 2020 May/June edition awarded this wine 5 stars and Top of Class rating in the "Best of NSW Wines" tasting category.

Winemaker's notes.

The hot and dry drought conditions experienced in the 2019 vintage meant that the grapes were picked a week earlier than the average. We harvested at a lower Baumé to retain the acid crispness and yet still retain the lovely fruit salad flavours associated with the variety. The wine is light straw in colour with green tints. The bouquet is reminiscent of melon, passionfruit and pineapple aromas that leads to a palate full of succulent passionfruit and confectionery flavours that has a refreshingly dry, sherbet finish.

food pairing

This wine will go well with seafood dishes such as sushi, grilled tuna steaks and salmon or shellfish. It will also complement spiced Asian dishes or enjoyed by itself as an aperitif.

2019 Hunter Valley Chardonnay

2019 Hunter Valley Chardonnay

Chardonnay is recognised as one of the Hunter Valleys finest varieties, showing many different facets depending on vintage, vineyard and vinification methods. This wine has been made from fruit from our vineyard, with some of the wine fermented in Hungarian, French and American oak barrels and the remainder left to mature on lees in stainless steel tanks. These components have been blended together to produce a wine that is green-straw in colour, with aromas of stone fruit, banana and those  vanillin oak and brioche-like yeast characters that barrel fermentation brings.

Winemaker's notes.

This Chardonnay has been made from fruit grown on our vineyard, and partially matured in a blend of Hungarian and American oak 300 litre hogshead barrels. The wine shows ripe tropical fruit aromas, underpinned with barrel ferment oak characters such as vanilla and coconut. The silky-smooth palate has flavours of melon and green mango and again those vanillin oak characters play a supporting role in adding a subtle complexity. The textured finish arises from lees stirring during maturation and the wine finishes with a clean acid and fruit finish.

food pairing

A wine best consumed slightly chilled, it can be served with foods as diverse a sushi, light pasta dishes, tuna steaks or enjoyed by itself. Enjoy our wine in moderation.

2019 Primera Reserve Shiraz

2019 Primera Reserve Shiraz

Sometimes a wine comes along that demands to be bottled in its own right. This is one of those wines. The happy marriage of beautiful fruit, careful winemaking and slow barrel maturation has resulted in a big, embraceable lushness. Rich is its middle name.

At its best when accompanied by food!

Winemakers Notes.

This wine is a result of the winemaking team making a decision to keep 5 barrels of Shiraz separate for it's own release for our Wine Club members. This selection has realised a wine with ripe cherry, plum and blackberry compote combined with soft integrated oak and an inherent spiciness that carries over onto the palate. The rich flavours of ripe red fruit, vanillin oak  and the soft tannins from barrel maturation make for a more-ish palate.

food pairing

Great drinking with juicy beef dishes, smoked lamb or tasty cheese.

2019 Primera Merlot

2019 Primera Merlot

This stylish wine made from Hilltops fruit, has red berry scents with a smooth and round palate, ripe with cherry and red fruit nuances, varietal leafy characters and a balanced dry acid, oak and tannin finish.

Winemaker's notes.

The gang decided we needed a lighter type of red than our usual fare and this is the result of our endeavours. Made using a cold soak and some whole berry fermentation and fruit from the Hilltops region, this wine is a softer style ready for drinking now or for the next 3 to 5 years. Full of cherry, plum and mocha- like aromas and flavours, this wine will be sure to please those looking for an elegant, medium -bodied wine

food pairing

This medium-bodied wine would complement a range of dishes from antipasto plates to lamb or pork spare ribs.

2019 Primera Tempranillo

2019 Primera Tempranillo

Tempranillo is establishing itself as a great variety for Australian conditions and this delicious Hilltops wine is cherry -red in colour with savoury notes of plum, raspberry, tomato leaf and mocha- like American oak notes. The palate displays rich, red fruit flavours of plum and blueberry with a soft, drying tannin and oak finish.

Winemaker's notes.

This is our second vintage of this famous varietal, and we were so impressed we have grafted over an acre of our vines to this variety. Deep, cherry red in colour, this wine has a savoury bouquet of tomato bush, earth, and Indian spice with understated vanillin American oak notes. This wine is quite different from its predecessor and we are delighted at its adaptability to different styles.

The medium-weight palate is silky smooth and has flavours of spice, dried raspberry and nutmeg with an understated note of oak with just a hint of drying tannins. A style we are enamoured with that will complement any red meat dish or hard cheese.

food pairing

A good wine to accompany tapas sides, grilled eggplant and cheese, roasted beef dishes or lamb shanks.....(or pizza..Ed.)

2019 Fénix Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz

2019 Fénix Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz

The follow-up wine to our incredibly popular first Fénix. Exactly the same blend as the first edition, this wine is slightly different stylistically from its predecessor but still retains the brambly fruit power wrapped in a shroud of soft vanillin oak, that lends a softness to the palate. Big, warm and soft!

Winemakers Notes.

This limited-edition, second-release of our flagship wine is a reflection of the growing conditions leading up to the 2019 vintage. This is a big wine in every way, with big fruit, soft oak and a warming, soft tannin finish. This wine has a richness to it already, with cranberry, blackberry and rhubarb fruit characters backed by soft vanillin oak and soft, drying tannins. Much like its predecessor, this wine is best enjoyed with food.

food pairing

A rich wine that would complement hearty lamb and beef dishes such as osso bucco, lamb shanks, or beef bourguignon.
