This wine represents the yearly re-awakening of the vines and the aspirations of the coming vintage and is the pinnacle of our red winemaking at Iron Gate Estate. The first release is the 2018 vintage and the style is a dense, dark wine packed with blackcurrant, blackberry, spice and vanillin oak aromas and flavours due to the careful maturation in our best barrels.
A traditional Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, only 2000 numbered bottles of this wine will be made in vintages considered good enough to be of Fénix standard. The stylish packaging also sets this wine apart and it will be for limited tasting only.
Winestate magazine 2020 May/June edition awarded this wine 5 stars and Top of Class rating in the “Wines of NSW” tasting category.
The 2018 Fénix Cabernet Shiraz, is our flagship red and pride of the fleet. A big red wine made from fruit sourced from Mudgee and a blend comprising of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Shiraz. Matured in French and American oak hogshead barrels and made for cellaring, this wine comes in individually numbered bottles with a hand-select top quality cork and black wax finish. The wine is dark-crimson in colour with loads of redcurrant and blackberry jube characters underpinned with just the right amount of oak and a drying tannin and acid finish. Ripe for putting away for awhile if you can resist the urge not to open it. Made especially for our members, you might be able to twist our cellar door staff ‘s arms into letting you have a taste of the wine when visiting us.
Late edition…24th June 2020 from my tasting notes “...still looks as fresh as the day we bottled it. Deep, dark in colour, leave the wine for a few minutes to open up to blackberry and blackcurrant aromas and a juicy, full flavoured and firm palate.” GB
